OSMIUM - precision density-standard cube 1cm3 - 22.6 NEW! Production time about 3 weeks - Free laser engraving in all languages possible. Please note that this item is excluded from reductions or special offers. Using finest materials, each density cube was lapped to 10x10x10mm by a famous company especialized in noble metals. Each one separately ground and polished it represents the theoretical density of the respective element by its weight. The weight is not affected by the laser inscription. Information such as element symbol, name and density is durable burned at the surface.
I am often asked why these cubes are so expensive. Here is a short explanation:
We get the raw cubes EDM cut and have to grind them into size which takes a few hours. The grinding and polishing is deadly dangerous due to highly toxic fumes of OsO4 which forms in air from metal dust and powder.
To grind one cube I have to prepare myself with a full body protective suit + full mask and work under a fumehood. After grinding the working place has to be washed carefully to remove the slightest spots or drops of contamination.
You see there is much more than just the material. I hope this helps to understand the price.
Once finished. The Os cube is not toxic anymore because of the shiny surface which cannot be attacked by Oxygen.
Osmium was discovered in 1803 by Smithson Tennant in London, England. Osmium is a member of the platinum group of metals and is commonly found in conjunction with these elements (abundancy is 1 x 10-4 ppm in the earth's crust). The mixed metals can be extracted from the ore with aqua regia, followed by treatment of the soluble and insoluble portions in various ways. Osmium is found in both portions and is removed as the volatile tetroxide, which can then be reduced. Pure osmium is silver in color and is the densest of all metals. It has a pungent smell, due to the formation of osmium tetroxide Applications for osmium include its use as an alloying constituent with other group metals, the resultant alloys being extremely hard (e.g. osmiridium, a naturally occuring alloy of osmium and iridium which is extremely hard and is used for the tips of pen nibs). Osmium can also be used as a powerful catalyst in gas reactions.
